We Like To Think Of Him As A Mischievous Badger

Elijah Dukes currently leads all major league rookies with eight home runs and is considered one of the best athletes in baseball. Dukes, who had numerous run-ins with the law throughout his minor league career, including a January arrest for marijuana possession, and has been suspended by the Devil Rays at least 5 times, is in trouble again. He is now accused of threatening to kill his wife and her kids.

Nishea Gilbert, one of four women with which Dukes has five children (two were born eight days apart) has now filed two separate restraining orders against him, saying she feels her's and her children's lives are in danger. Below is one of the messages that Gilbert saved on her phone.
Hey, dawg. It's on, dawg. You dead, dawg. I ain't even bulls-------. Your kids too, dawg. It don't even matter to me who is in the car with you. N-----, all I know is, n-----, when I see your m-----f------- a-- riding, dawg, it's on. As a matter of fact, I'm coming to your m-----f------ house.
Apparently worried that his point did not come across clear enough, Dukes then sent his wife a picture of a handgun (seen below). He is also accused of barging into a middle school, at which wife is a teacher, in the middle of a school day and threatening her. The school has since banned Dukes from the campus.

Let's summarize...
  • Left voice mails threatening to kill his wife and kids
  • Sent at least one picture of a handgun
  • Entered a middle school, while classes were in session, and threatened to kill his wife
  • Has been arrested six times
  • Has 5 children with 4 different women
  • Was suspended two times in 2006 for run-ins with coaches and teammates
  • Suspended two times in 2005 by the AA Southern League
  • Suspended in 2004 for a month after a confrontation with a coach
At this rate, Elijah Dukes should be playing for the Cincinnati Bengals this fall.

I'm going to say that this officially ends the era of intentionally throwing at Elijah. It was a short era.

I went to Hillsborough High with Elijah. He was at least one of the top 5 dumbest guys I have ever met in my life. I was friends with some guys on the football team and we were eating at the CiCi's buffet at Fletcher and Dale Mabry. Somehow during the discussion the topic of turtles came up. Elijah had no idea what a turtle was. It took us about ten minutes, inlcuding many such comments as "has a hard shell" and "can live on both land and water" until Elijah finally realized what a turtle was.

As one of my friend's from Hillsborough so eloquently put it, he can't believe that Elijah made it to the majors. His impression of Elijah coming back to the dugout after striking out on a curveball: "damn n****, that shit be curvin and s***." Sometimes you think so people are just too stupid to be professional athletes. Clearly, this is not the case.

a) right now i kinda wish somebody would intentionally throw at Dukes...maybe the batting practive coach?

b) doesnt surprise me at all

c) I need to sleep on this. right now i feel half anger/half betrayal. dukes was the one player i was looking forward to this season more than the rest. kept thinking now that he was in the majors he would realize the importance and we would never hear about any of this crap again. right now i am not sure which is worse...the headache that he cause, or the fact that it just adds another reason for other people to laugh at the Rays.

I think that every article written about anyone from now on should end with a Date of Birth/Mother/Gender breakdown of all the characters involved.

It's so much easier to follow that way.

i didnt really want to make light of a guy threatening the life of his wife and kids...but my favorite part of the whole mess is this quote from Dukes...

"I'm just going to play ball, that's it," he said. "I've got to go. I've got a video game to finish."

Not weights...or stretching...or swings in the cage...or even HIS ANGER MANAGEMENT CLASS...a friggin video game! way to have your priorities set straight there Mr. Dukes.
