[THE HANGOVER]
Benny Boo Boo Is Back From Durham

THE GOOD: The Red Sox lost to the D-Backs so the Rays pulled within 1 game of the AL East and are actually a game up on the Sawx in the ever-so-important loss column.

THE BAD: Sutter Home wines (well, there goes a potential sponsor).

THE TELLING: We should be back up to full speed tomorrow.

DEVIL RAYS WEBTOPIA...
  • Don't forget to VOTE for Carl Crawford to start the all-star game. If you haven't voted yet today, go NOW! [MLB All-Star Voting]
  • The Rays made it official, recalling Ben Zobrist from Durham. [Rays Report]
  • This is the first we have heard Xavier Nady's name mentioned with the Rays, but it is an interesting possibility. [Outs Per Swing]
  • Bugs and Cranks spoke with Durham hitting coach Gary Gaetti. [Bugs and Cranks]

I laid it out as a question on my blog, and now i'll ask you: who gets moved/DFA'd to make room for El Gato?
You seem to have a much better grip on the ins and outs of the ups and downs of players coming and going on and off the roster, so what do you think?

By the time Pena comes back(late this week or early next week) Bartlett's child should be born and Aki may have served his suspension by then. If thats the case Zobrist goes back down.

That seems like the easy solution, but i think Maddon wants to try to find a way to keep Boo on the roster as a means of avoiding having to use Dirtbag (E-Lo) as his back-up SS... I think this may be the time to start shopping Hinske around again... check the market again now that teams have had a few more injuries...

I've been talking with an insider in NY about Nady as a potential candidate in Tampa Bay but it looks like the Pirates aren't dangling him just yet and the price tag is a little high. I really think the Rays gotta go big or not at all if they trade. They don't need to forfeit the future for Brian Giles or Ken Griffey Jr. I ran down a few guys I think the Rays should go after here: http://www.3guysandasportspage.com/?p=502

i think Tommy hit it on the head. Benny is only here for a few days.

The problem is Cliff Floyd. The Rays would rather not have 3 lefty hitting RF/DH types on the roster. Unfortunately Floyd is hogging a spot and the Rays have to keep Hinske and Gross around for the next time Floyd goes on the DL.

and the Rays can't trade Floyd. He is strictly a DH nowadays so that means AL. And the Rays are not about to deal with another AL playoff contender and help them get better.

Unfortunately I think the Rays are stuck with all 3 for a while.

How long do you think the Rays plan to operate with no legitimate utility infielder?

in theory Papa Joe has a backup for every position. Aybar can handle all but SS and Longoria can handle SS.

This is definitely not Maddon's ideal roster. I think when the trading deadline gets closer this is the type of trade the Rays will make. Something that moves Hinske or Gross but also adds a left-handed bat that can play the infield. Aybar can backup right field.

So if the Rays can move Hinske for a utility infielder that is an upgrade offensively and defensively over Zobrist. That is the deal that will be made. And then Maddon will have a roster he approves of.

Sure, Prof, tell everyone that Tommy "hit it on the head", and then support what I said all along about Hinske... are you sure you're not a paid journalist/politician? lol

ha! good point. guess I am saying tommy is right on for now but eventually they do need to move somebody. and hinske seems most logical
