[THE HANGOVER]
Rays Pay Price For Playing Game The Right Way

THE GOOD: Playing the game the right way. The Rays did everything right in the last two games. Coocoo Crisp did everything wrong. If Crisp walks to first base the situation is over.

THE BAD: Giving Coocoo Crisp an opportunity to win the game by getting James Shields ejected in the second inning. We really thought Crisp had something coming but we assumed it would wait until later in the game to find a less meaningful moment or a time when losing Shields would mean less. Still, there was little reason to expect CooCoo to charge the mound. And we can't fault Shields for sticking up for his teammates. Shields had to throw at CooCoo for the bushleague slide on Wednesday and Shields handled the situation perfectly. The ball was at CooCoo's leg. Not his head. If that pitch cost the Rays one win for the sake of playing the game the right way and for a little extra team unity, we are all for it...The umpires letting Jon Lester get away with several inside pitches and never even issuing a warning. At least one of those pitches was intentional...Pitching to Manny Ramirez in the first inning with 1 out, first base open and Mike Lowell on deck. The worst-case scenario if Joe Maddon walks ManRam is a 2-run wall-ball double. The best-case scenario is a double-play waiting to happen. Instead, Papa Joe chose to pitch to Manny Being Manny and Manny Was Manny, hitting a 3-run home run.

THE TELLING: The Rays have a 2 game lead over Oakland and a 4 games lead over Toronto and Minnesota in the wild card race.

DEVIL RAYS WEBTOPIA...
  • The best news we heard all day yesterday? The Bucs original "Bucco Bruce" helmet was named the "2nd Coolest Helmet in History". [Shutdown Corner]
  • Don't forget to VOTE for Carl Crawford to start the all-star game. If you haven't voted yet today, go NOW! [MLB All-Star Voting]
  • Bugs and Cranks has their weekly power rankings up and the Rays are #1 again...These posts say they are written by the "B&C Staff" but we have a funny feeling that Chalk is stuffing the ballot box. [Bugs and Cranks]
  • Joe Maddon met with his hitters before last night's game and emphasized the need to cut down on the strikeouts. After striking out 19 times in the first two games of the series, the Rays struck out 9 times last night. [MLB]

You hit the nail on the head with this one Prof. Too bad we lost the game, but that was probably gonna happen anyway, with how we've been playing at fenway. It will be interesting to see how the team reacts in the upcoming few games.

The one thing that kills me, and I feel like it happens often at fenway, is the umpiring. Now maybe Navvi doesn't frame the ball as well as Varitek (ok he definitely doesn't) but I seemed obvious that Lester got all kinds of calls on the edges of the plate that none of our guys got.

How a pitch behind Aybar's leg doesn't verify a warning at the very least i'll never know...but to follow that up by plunking Crawford and buzzing Floyd- come on!! Ridiculous...

I think the umps wanted another brawl in hopes of seeing Youkilis v. Gomes MMA-style...(i know Gomes was already gone, but whatever).

i wouldn't have put it past Gomes to come out of the clubhouse if something else had erupted

Gomes is baseball's version of an enforcer in hockey.
I knew there was a reason that they keep him around (Bob Probert and Andre Roy would be proud).

Soon every roster will have a sub-average fielder, who can sometimes hit for power, sitting the bench waiting for his chance to lay the smack-down on some punk like Crisp.

Props to navi on a tackle that would make Derrick Brooks smile.

Can't agree more. The girls at DRaysBay have been crying more than Coco.

Just read an AP article out of Boston tht said that Crisp was mad at Crawford for supposedly pulling his hair... he should've been thanking Carl for not kneeing him in the face... you don't charge the mound and then whine when the pitcher's teammates come to his aid, that's how it works... there's no rules in fighting- you'd figure a punk like Crisp would know that.

So the red sox spark the incident because a man who legally changed his name TO coco talked to much and took out a player for an earlier legal play, charged the mound and started a brawl, and jon lester ( who if he wouldve not missed wouldve hit 5 players ) and the red sox bench coach who slammed down james shields are allowed to stay in the game.... i dont get it.

other thoughts... coco you are lucky shields didnt connect and navi laid on you basically protecting you from gomes, so my advice would be shut up and pretend you are more than just a 4th outfielder
