[TAINT OF THE DEVIL RAYS]
How Does One Quantify 10 Years Of Sucktitude? Fastest Franchise To 1,000 Losses!
Yesterday afternoon, the Tampa Bay Rays became the 29th franchise in baseball history to lose 1,000 games. And it only took 10 years and 73 days, easily out-distancing the Arizona Diamondbacks who now stand at 853-833 and bettering the previous mark by 10 days. The San Diego Padres needed 10 years and 83 days to reach 1,000.

We will admit that this is easier to swallow now that the Rays are fielding a winning ballclub. However, there is something to be said about losing 1,000 games in less than 10.5 seasons. Of course, their all-time record is so bad, that if the Rays win 90 games this season and every season for the next 17 years, they still would not reach .500 until 2026.

Thank goodness for this season's turnaround. The Rays were on pace to catch the Phillies record of 10,000 losses in September.

kyle,

good question. i looked it up. and sure enough. they beat the Padres by 10 days and the Mets by about 40 days. there were a couple of other franchises that hit the mark late in the 11th season.

I thought the Mets would be right about there.

Didn't think of the Padres though.

Mets were on pace to crush it until '69 (season 8) when they won the series and they had winning records in seasons 9 and 10 also.

most national league teams didn't even play 1000 games in their first ten seasons. there might be a team or two that got to 1000 losses in fewer games.
