Percival Return From DL; Rays Drop Finale To Jays
THE GOOD: The Red Sox were swept in Anaheim by the Angels, maintaining the Rays 1.5 game lead in the AL East.
THE BAD: The Yankees swept the A's. We suppose the good news there is that the Rays now have one less enemy in the wild card hunt. After trading two starting pitchers the A's are now 5 back of the Sox and 6.5 behind the Rays. However, the Yankees are now only 3 back in the wild card and only 4.5 behind the Rays.
THE TELLING: BJ Upton was back in the 2-hole yesterday, one day after being dropped to the 7th spot in the rotation.

- Sad news for those of you still holding out hope that Gary Glover would be desginated for assignment...Troy Percival was activated from the DL and Glover was added to the DL with a sore calf. Percy pitched the 9th inning yesterday, striking out 1 and allowing only 1 hit. [Tampa Tribune]

So last year it was Shawn Camp and this year it feels like Trever Miller. I was stunned to look up yesterday and see that Miller's ERA was just barely over 4. Then he let Hammel's two runners scores and I said, "a ha!" What is that inherited runner stat that we ran last year that proved Camp was one of the all-time worst relief pitchers?
I do not have nearly the same amount of disdain for Miller that I do for Camp, but it was surprising that Reyes, for example has a .35 smaller WHIP, yet has a run higher ERA. I would guess, just based on watching games that the explanation is that Reyes starts more innings and, therefore, gets credit for more of the runs. Whereas Miller almost always comes in with guys on base. Since you did such a good job last year with Camp, can you run the numbers again?
Isn't it Hammel who should have you worried? Hammel is a much bigger concern in my opinion.
Hammel is bad, but for the most part he only pitches when the game is out of reach. On the other hand, Camp was often brought into close games last year and he was, as Clayton said, EPICALLY bad.
I will look into Miller's numbers, but keep in mind that he was put into a lot of situations this season that he wasn't signed to do, basically bc of injuries. He is only supposed to be a 1 or 2 batter per game pitcher and almost always against lefties. but he has faced a lot of righties unfortunately.
so in Miller's case, i blame misuse more than anything. then again, you could say that using Shawn Bleepin' Camp at all last year was "misuse"
