Media Approval Ratings: Andy Freed
C'mon, you guys knew this was coming eventually...There is a general sense amongst some of our readers that all we do is bash the Rays media coverage. The truth is we actually admire most of the working media and respect most of their work. We just get a sense that the Rays media coverage can at times be lazy. Just because the Rays were a second-class team for many years doesn't mean we as fans deserved second-class coverage. So while our frustration can manifest itself at times on this site, we want to know what you guys think of various members of the Rays media coverage. Next up...Rays Radio Play-by-Play guy Andy Freed...
We must admit, we know very little about Andy Freed. In the last two seasons, we have listened to 3 or 4 games on the radio. We do know that the Rays' gig is his first in the major leagues having formerly worked for a couple of minor league teams, and he turned down an opportunity to be considered for the Mets vacant radio position this past off-season.
So: Do you like the Andy Freed? And let's hear your reasons in the comments...

I like Andy Freed, but I think I have to qualify it by saying I like Dave Wills & Andy Freed as a team/hetero life partners. The thing about them is that they manage to give you all the info you need about the action and still goof off occasionally and sound like they're having a good time. And they're not just a couple of homers, they'll criticize players when it's warranted, which can't be said about every team's announcers (*COUGHJohnSterlingSusanWaldman*COUGH*). I guess the best compliment I can pay them is that when I have to listen to the other team's announcers on XM when the Rays are on the road, I find myself wishing I could get Dave & Andy somehow instead.
sterling and waldmyn are the absolute WORST. EVER.
You won't find me bashing any of the Rays' broadcast team, they really are solid all around.
Freed and Wills together really work as a team. They don't force a line and they don't just call the big plays. Both give each other room to do their job and call an interesting game even if its a blowout. Listen to some teams' radio broadcasters and you have dead air or a faint snore in the background sometimes. These two give you stuff to think about and help you see the game you wish you could watch. Freed keeps the stats relevant and is keen to just show the enjoyment of doing a good job... you hear it in his voice and in Wills. Approve!
