Media Approval Ratings: Todd Kalas
C'mon, you guys knew this was coming eventually...There is a general sense amongst some of our readers that all we do is bash the Rays media coverage. The truth is we actually admire most of the working media and respect most of their work. We just get a sense that the Rays media coverage can at times be lazy. Just because the Rays were a second-class team for many years doesn't mean we as fans deserved second-class coverage. So while our frustration can manifest itself at times on this site, we want to know what you guys think of various members of the Rays media coverage. Next up...Rays pregame host and in-game reporter Todd Kalas...
Kalas is the son of hall-of-fame broadcaster Harry Kalas, who worked for the Phillies for many years. In addition to being the Rays token sideline blonde, Kalas also hosts the pregame show and "Inside the Rays" on FSN. He comes off to us as a bit of a homer. His choice of a suit often looks grossly out of place in the stands and yet he looks a bit uncomfortable when he wears a polo (only during afternoon games?). Maybe he should get some wardrobe advice from Erin Andrews next time she is in town.
For us he seems likeable, but he spends a bit too much time catering to signs made by 5th graders and a little too little time getting the viewers relevant information about the game.
So: Do you like Todd Kalas? And let's hear your reasons in the comments...

I do like the Todd Kalas. Sometimes I feel like he is the only "sideline reporter" who realizes the inherent absurdity of that role, and has fun with it.
Man are you guys off base. Todd is a great guy. He is very friendly with all the fans in the stands and they love him. Your crack about 5th grade signs sure make you look bad. He is the perfect media man in the stands. He is sure to get promoted one day and all us season ticket holders will miss him because we don't get to see the broadcast but do get to see him in the stands. Go Todd
charlieray sounds like a mom that is offended when somebody tells them their child will not grow up to be a worldclass pianist
there are a lot of people that like the White Sox and Yankees announcers. that doesnt make them good.
Kalas does seem like a nice guy, but man what is the point?
thanks Prof for reminding me that the Rays are pretty much the only team in the history of sports without a female blonde "sideline" reporter.
why hasn't Stu hired Jen Sterger yet? Not blonde. but really, does it matter?
I love Kalas! He's the man!
I agree that it would be handy if he did a little more reporting, but I like Todd and I particularly like his interaction with Magrane.
Also, I actually watched the Inside the Rays road trip edition and I thought it was a really good presentation on all the moving parts that go on into getting these guys to games.
I've been to about 10 games this season and everyone recognizes and loves Todd. He has a great rapport with a lot of the season ticket holders and is hilarious off camera. I openly wish I could be as much of a stud as Todd Kalas.
I support Todd Kalas but if Jen Sterger is available, I am all for it.
While I'm not sure I'd like to see him in the booth, i think the "strapping young lad" does a pretty good job on the sidelines. I think a little more in depth coverage would be nice from both him and staats/magrane.
Todd Kalas is a pimp. Just ask Dewayne and Joe. Did you see Todd during the Red Sox game in Boston that was on ESPN? He was totally pimping Erin Andrews and that other girl were there. Even last night Dewayne and Joe were talking about how the ladies all want to meet the "strapping young lad" Todd Kalas. After Jonny Gomes, Todd would be the guy I would want to hit the clubs with.
Jen Sterger??? Putting that putrid siliconed mass of anti-talented attention whoreness on the Rays broadcasts would be pretty much the only way to get me NOT to watch.
Todd is great, I would have his babies if 'twas biologically possible. There, I said it.
ok. i like Kalas, but the man-crushing that is going on in here is pretty disturbing
The strapping young lad does an outstanding job, much better than the Marlins "side line" reporter.
Todd is a great guy. Not only is he professional, but he's just a nice person. Kudos to Todd for being humble and super down to earth!
Todd is loved by sports fans as far away as Hawaii :-)
He's got great genes!
