Wow -- what a surprise that the philly fans have been their usual jerk selves to anybody from the Rays. I know that there is always a low percentage of incredibly rude phans, but philly always seems to take the cake!!!

Backs to the wall tonight -- Lets get this back to St Pete!

Thanks Professor for all your hard work -- your blog continues to be the best!!!

Scott Kazmir throwing too many pitches? Check!

I love how McCarver said Kazmir walks "about 4 batters per game". of course Kaz walks 4 per 9 innings, not per game. When was the last time Kazmir even sniffed the 9th inning? 2006?

8:47 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know the pitch Kaz hit Utley with was a bad pitch, but when they showed the over head view, Utley's front foot was over the inside line of the box. Is that allowed, by rule? And these umps have been squeezing our pitchers all series.

8:47 PM
Blogger The Professor said...

Kaz already approaching 30 pitches

29 pitches. 14 strikes, 15 balls

8:52 PM
Blogger Possum Avenger said...

vintage kaz, but let's be honest this ump is squeezing him bad. I'm not one to bitch about umping all the time, but the balls and strikes in the series have been pathetic. This game is not setting a new standard

8:53 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

maybe it is the spotlight of the series. but this is the worst umpiring (and some has gone against Phills) I have ever seen.

8:56 PM

Alright, follow Navi's example and take some pitches. This ump's zone is tiny, tiny, tiny. Work the count. Let's go.

I see that on IFC they are showing the Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Can't tell which is more gruesome, this game or the movie.

If the Rays continue to swing at the first, second or even third pitch - they deserve to lose.

Sigh.

You know what this game needs? More full counts.

I assume this is a lot less work for you Prof than running a "live blog". It will be interesting to see who shows up for those next year.

9:08 PM
Blogger The Professor said...

It is not so much the work as much as it is tough to really get into the game because I am typing a lot more and reading/moderating all the comments. It can add something to a regular season game, but the cost/benefit is a lot less in the postseason

How many innings do you think Price is available tonight? After Nuke's "performance" last night, I doubt he'll be put in.

There we go. Spiritual Leader of the Rays gets it started and Longo follows.

I figured out what the problem is. I was sitting in the wrong chair the last two games. I moved to the Lucky Chair and the PL Combo gets going.

What is the forecast? And how do they work a game that is called in the 4th? Do they pick up from where they left off or is like the system I grew up with - game is a bust and we start from scratch?

9:33 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

According to Fox - if it stops before 4.5 innings, start over.

9:35 PM
Blogger The Professor said...

Fox would love a do-over. The longer the series goes, the more money they make and a rainout is like free baseball for them

9:48 PM
Blogger The Professor said...

2 scenarios if the game is called:

1. before the Rays bat in the 5th, it is not a complete game. Everybody has flights scheduled for tonight, the teams, the press, fans. But game 5 would be replayed tomorrow in Philly.

2. called after Rays bat with Rays trailing 2-1. Could baseball really end the word series on a rain delay? by rules, yes. But that couldnt happen could it?

9:50 PM
Blogger The Professor said...

to clarify. game will be "official" after Rays bat in 5th. that would mean a Phillies win

9:51 PM
Blogger Simple Assault said...

Watching the Fox Feed of Pitch Trax online --- funny how Joe Buck says that Kazmir gets a call when the ball is clearly in the black and it is great pitching by Coles when the ball is out side the zone.

I am sure every team feels the umpiring is against them but this is ridiculous.

9:52 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Win probability for Phillies - if went all 9 innings - 58%. If we end now... 99% ugh.

9:55 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

This is nuts - Maddon should assume this is the 9th inning... Watch them call the game... The crowd knows.

9:57 PM
Blogger Possum Avenger said...

MLB will not call the game before nine innings. If they do, I will NEVER get over it.

10:02 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

"that was close" these announcers dont even know what to say. a strike is a strike. you cant talk around it.

10:05 PM
Blogger Possum Avenger said...

Could this ump squeeze Kaz anymore. That pitch to burrell was right down the middle of the plate.

10:06 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I can't get to a TV who is warming up?

10:07 PM
Blogger PTownFan said...

Seriously... how are these umps selected? This is unbelievable.

10:09 PM
Blogger Simple Assault said...

Finally - even the announcers are having to comment on the poor umpiring -- Coles would get every one of those calls

10:09 PM
Blogger Simple Assault said...

I have said it here before -- Kazs problems for 2008 are all related to he and Maddon showing up Cousins at Anaheim in the press. 100 Kazmir pitches before that start got you 7 innings -- 100 pitches since gets you 5.

But this is the World Series with every body watching. There needs to be an investigation

10:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

What is most embarrassing is that fact that we continue this game. Watch it finally get called and the Phillies declared victors. It will always be known as a shallow victory.

10:17 PM
Blogger Possum Avenger said...

Scot -- If that happens I will never, and i mean NEVER, forgive Selig

10:19 PM
Blogger PTownFan said...

Crikey. The Mad Australian gets it done in a Noreaster-wannabe.

So do you guys on the west coast get a Comcast HD commercial every half inning like we do on the West Coast? The only part of the WS I won't miss...

10:20 PM
Blogger Simple Assault said...

Lets get two frigging runs this inning so we dont have to worry about it --- bats please - top of the order

10:21 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Sorry - hollow is the word I'm looking for. If Phillies are declared winners, the victory will be hollow. And Selig would be hear more about it than a certain exhibition game that ended in a tie.

10:22 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Here on the west coast, we are using DirecTV, so no comcast commercials. There are a host of commercials I will not miss. I'm not even watching TV now. (lost it to SWMBO...)

is bert emmanuel gonna get called out or what?

10:27 PM

puddles starting to develop on field. at this point i almost want to see the game get called to see how MLB handles it

10:30 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Rob Neyer over at ESPN suggests that this series might go down as the worst World Series ever.. Probably not, but not a winner should the game be called now.

So will Upton run?

10:32 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I have an even better call.. Pena hits a homer - Rays take the lead. Game is called so that entire inning is moot, Rays lose. Thats how it could be even better.

10:33 PM
Blogger The Professor said...

with 2 outs, Upton has to run. gotta get in scoring position

10:33 PM
Blogger The Professor said...

did upton have his bathing suit on when he slid into second?

10:34 PM
Blogger Jordi said...

Wet and sloppy is not how I like my baseball.

What if someone gets hurt?

I think they are hoping the Rays tie it so they can call it.

10:34 PM
Blogger The Professor said...

i thought Philly had this field that drained super well and could handle all this rain. what happened to that?

10:35 PM
Blogger Simple Assault said...

Pena Dong - then please call this game off

10:35 PM
Blogger PTownFan said...

Probably requires a career ending injury to change things. If there's a Baseball God, the injured will be wearing lotsa padding and little royal blue stripes on his shoulders...

10:35 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Simple Assault - if Pena hits a homer and the game is then called - Pena's homer is wiped out. Rays still lose.

10:37 PM
Blogger PTownFan said...

10:39 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Again - if they call the game after this half inning, the top of the inning will not count. In short - this sucks.

10:39 PM

Great news!!! New rule says that the run counts!!! We pick up the game from where it is left off.

10:43 PM
Blogger PTownFan said...

Scot, you're killin' me. Do you have Bud on line 2 or what?

10:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

No - it was announced on ESPN radio. The original rule is straight forward. If game is called now, run does not count because the Phillies did not get their half of the inning, hence Phillies win. But it looks like the new rule, which I have never seen enacted, takes precedence. What if Longo had dropped in that last pitch... 3-2 Rays - very exciting.

10:46 PM
Blogger PTownFan said...

Classic 2008 nail biting Rays Baseball. Looks like another hour and a half or two hours of rain with a plastic bag on top of mush (despite the super fab state of the art drainage system). Where does this game go from here considering that the next game is played in Tampa Bay?

10:51 PM
Blogger Jordi said...

they should move the series to the trop Wed. If the Rays lose one, series over. If the Rays win both, bring it back to Philly for the final 3 innings.

10:53 PM
Blogger The Professor said...

the big question now is "when"...ideally baseball would play the final innings tomorrow afternoon. but Fox will insist they play tomorrow night, with travel plans-be-damned. Of course the weather is actually supposed to be worse tomorrow.

hey all....made it to the computer from my pacing points in my living room for the rain delay

anybody else laugh when bob dupuy said they woulda called the game anyway even if the rays didnt score a run? that really was the biggest hit of the year for pena, and bud selig will agree with me on that.

speaking of bud selig...whoever he has choosing umpires for the world series needs to be fired, shot, and given a labotamy (in any order possible). seriously...this is the most inconsistant strike zone ever...that with some terrible calls (2 of which mlb has apologized for already) is inexcusable in spring training, nevertheless the world series.

sigh....at least the rays tied it and i may get my wish...another day of major league baseball

GO RAYS

Blogger Unknown said...

Good to hear from you Cougar. I try to avoid the TV, it just gives me gas. Its more fun to watch the live blogs of people (especially Philly fans) go nuts over this game. The consensus on the Baseball Prospectus site was that the game should have been called in the 4th inning. Not now. And its also fun to watch how the MLB website pitch tracker does not look like what is being called.

a few other thoughts (sorry if they were already brought up i scanned through and didnt see it)

obviously this has to be one of the worst offciated series in recent memory, down the middle? nah just doesnt feel like a strike to me, how about the next pitch, nah too near the middle of the plate... barely nick the pant leg of baldelli, a for sure out, stick your glove and ball halfway up rollins ass? i think that swipe missed ( i wish we would have won this game if only to use the title "Phisted" as my recap for the game)....why didnt they just call the game when it was raining in the fourth and start over? dont they have a doppler in philly?... i really want to see that direct tv commercial again, im having withdrawls

whatup scot

well...game is oficially suspended by mlb. so that begs the question...what next?

they try to play tomorrow. my guess is price starts for the rays. that makes the most sense. shields could start...and id say in any game that wasnt an elimination game, thats a bad idea. for the phillies, well, they only have to pitch 3 innings to the rays. they could start with a mid releiver easily, maybe one that doesnt hurt as much if he cant pitch in game 6.

also...i really am curious as to why mlb didnt call this in the 4th or before the 5th. yes, they were trying to get the game in, but if they see it getting worse, isnt it better to call the game early then have to explain later as to why the world series was won with a 6 inning game? just food for thought...

something funny of espn.com's game blog (Jayson Stark)

And now for yet another complication: The Rays checked out of their hotel in center-city Philadelphia, in anticipation of flying home after the game -- and they can't get back in, because the hotel is sold out.

They're scrambling to find rooms -- somewhere -- as we speak.

Sleeping on the bus?

Prediction for tomorrow - even more rain - prediction for the series, everything will be delayed a day or 2. (See earthquake of 89.) Rules appear to be firm, they have to finish 5 before returning to the Trop for a possible 6/7.

good morning from Hazleton, PA... where it is currently 31 degrees and there is 5 inches of snow in my front yard. I am guessing it is only rain down in Philly as we are in some elevation here... Not looking good today tho.

It's a miracle for it to be snowing here on this day, this is really early for snow... I keep feeling like anything is possible.

If the Rays can some how win this upcoming 4 inning baseball game, I truly believe we can do the unthinkable...

Maybe the boys got the swagger back...

I have some questions, maybe we can chew on...
who starts the bottom of the 6th?? My vote is Price because he is used to starting... It could be instant drama having a non-starter start-be wild and give the Phils a cheap run. The 6th inning scares me to death, the rest I am ok with... if we get into a save situation I want JP on the hill...

Just heard Ravich say that the game is pushed back to Thurs. Hixon, where did you hear Hammels is done for the season? It would seem too tempting not to have him at least available for a game 7 if it goes that far.
