- Joe Magrane is leaving the Rays TV booth and will join the new MLB Network. [The Heater]

- Bobby Fenton of 1010 Sports pointed out that all the changes to ticket and parking prices (ie. day of game surcharge) are designed to increase the number of season ticket holders. - In the upcoming "Bill James Handbook", James ranks the top 25 young major leaguers under the age of 29. Evan Longoria is #17. Only Longoria and Felix Hernandez (#15) are under the age of 23...Also, the Rays are ranked third in terms of young talent on the major league roster, behind only the Twins and D-Backs. - In the same piece, we see that in the upcoming "Bill James Handbook", one formula ranks Dioner Navarro as the worst baserunner in baseball. In the formula a baserunner, among other things, gets 1 point for a stolen base and -2 points for a caught stealing. Navi was 0-4 on the year. How many of those do you think were straight steals as opposed to missed hit-and-runs?...On a side note it really should be -3 points for a caught stealing. It has been shown that stealing bases only has a positive effect on the offense if successful about 75% of the time. Anything less and it costs the team runs. [Baseball Analysts]

Is Bill James losing his fastball a bit? I really can't determine how he figured out the rankings for the 25 and under players. Fielder better than Wright? Ryan Zimmerman better than Longoria?
I don't know, even if it's just based on major league production, it's not a particularly impressive list.
from last year's handbook:
"he used two widely used statistics—“runs created” for position players and “runs allowed” for pitchers—as the basis for comparison. However, James made several adjustments and then took into account how many years the player has left before he is 33 years old."
there are several different versions of RC, but the most basic is similar to OPS.
but it is certainly flawed as Upton was not even in the top 25 last year and that was after he hit .300/.386/.500 with 24 home runs and 22 steals AT THE AGE OF 22!
Darn. I really like Magrane.
I am really going to miss Magrane. I hope Todd gets a shot at that gig if he wants it. I am, however, really happy that, by all appearances, the price of my season tickets isn't getting all jacked up.
I've seen where others say Todd Kalas should get Magrane's gig but I just don't think it fits. Kalas is more of a play-by-play guy than color commentator. He'd be my first choice if Staats ever left, but I think Brian Anderson meshed better with Staats last year when Magrane did the Olympics. Kalas and Staats seem to be stepping on each others' toes too much when they have done games together. Since they usually want an ex-ballplayer to fill the color role, I'd like to see Anderson get a shot. He did a good job last year, especially considering how new he was at it. I could see him being very good after getting a few more games under his belt.
