Price Not A Candidate To Close In '09

- Not sure this needed to be clarified but Andrew Friedman made it clear yesterday that David Price will be a starting pitcher in 2009 and is not a candidate to be a closer. [MLB]
- Rays Prospects takes another look at how starting pitchers throughout the organization pitched in 2008. This time we see that Andy Sonnanstine and James Shields both pitched within the range of major league #1 starters, while Edwin Jackson was no better than an average #5...We've mentioned this before. Sonny was clearly the better pitcher in 2008 (it wasn't even close). But the question for the Rays and for other teams looking to trade for a starting pitcher is: How good will Jackson be moving forward? Sonny is probably as good as he is going to get. Honestly, if one of them has to go, I'd rather have Sonny. The combination of control + good defense behind him means that if guys are going to get on base against him, they're going to have to earn it. Jackson has all kinds of potential, but potential is nothing until it's realized.
I'd rather have a #5 who pitches like a #1 than a #5 who MIGHT pitch like a #1.
i agree completely. BUT, what happens if this is the same thinking of all teams looking for starting pitchers. What if the best offer for Sonny is an above average right fielder and a solid mid-level pitching prospect and the best the Rays can get for Jackson is a below average right fielder and a "maybe" pitching prospect?
If the Rays can make a better trade with Sonny, will they be content to have Jackson as the #5?
Phegley is great in offense, but he seems to be gone at Pick Nr. 30 ... but the catcher class of '09 is very deep and we could get a really good catcher with our 30th pick!
The second choice would be a high ceiling arm like Zach Wheeler!
Hope either a high ceiling catcher (there are 5-6 catchers rumored for the first round: Stassi, Bailey, Maddox, Phegley, Medica, Zunino, outside chance: Susac) or a high ceiling arm (Wheeler, Chris Hernandez (available?), Krol (not such high of a ceiling ... but I like the guy ... great command, intelligent ... but not THAT good stuff)!
If we get a supplemental first round pick for Miller I would love to go like that:
1st round: Wheeler (RHP)
1st_s round: A Catcher ... lets hope one of the good once is still available!
2nd round: D.J. Le Mahieu (2B/SS/3B) ... good power, good ceiling
If the Orioles do indeed get Crow, and if he becomes a legitimate major leaguer (very large ifs), they could become contenders very quickly. That is especially so should they make good decisions by trading players like Huff, Sherrill, Mora, Hernandez et al for minor league depth and some upside talent.
Naturally, any speculation about prospects is tenuous at best. But with an outfield of Markakis and Jones, and Wieters at catcher, plus Guthrie, Matusz, Crow, Tillman and Arrieta on the way along with some other promising young pitchers (Erbe?), they have the core of an excellent team.
We need to do something about the advertisments. Im at work and people think Im looking at gay porn. I have never seen a weight loss ad with a guys creek lines hanging out. what is that?
that ad has been pulled. i should have done that earlier. i kept thinking it would be a 1-day or 2-day thing. but it has gone too long.
for those that are not familiar, we don't control the exact ad that is put up. they are usually keyword generated. of course i have no idea how a keyword would generate "naked guy standing on beach" but hey what do i know.
I just read something in the New York Post about the Rays being interested in Jason Giambi because they are looking for a left-handed DH. That can't really be true, can it? It seems like a bad fit on so many levels (lefty, old, probably too much money even at a reduction from last year, doesn't address right field at all).
um, girls who love Rocco do not want to imagine him as a guy who swings the other way, no matter how much he looks like him. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
who's Bryant?
I am sooo disappointed. Jake's dog was named "Bryant". The old dog that had died was named "Bear". Named after Alabama football coach Bear Bryant.
I remember Bear. This must be one of those chick flicks in your collection. :/
Ahh yes, the wonderful ads. I remember the "Barry Bonds ringtone" ads that were on here at one point. WTF would a Barry Bonds ringtone even sound like?
