This is quite a shock to me. I didn't really see this coming. I'll never forget Dan Johnson, that's for sure.
Anyone who can get Jonathan Papelbon to shut his damn mouth is definitely someone I'm cool with.
I hope they don't spend all the money in one place...

No, that is pretty standard. And it was the right thing to do. There was almost certainly no room for him on the roster and no demand for him anywhere either. Meanwhile, it provides him an opportunity to continue his career and make some good money.
It saddens me a bit because I always thought he was better than his reputation. He walked a lot and hit for mid-range or better power (which may have been the problem). He did not strike out inordinately, and apparently he was used a bit in the outfield last year. I don't know how acceptable his play was there, but it still seemed that he could contribute in the majors. I imagine I am missing something that the professionals saw.
