Montgomery 9, Jacksonville 6. Jason Cromer allowed only 2 unearned runs in 6 innings...Rhyne Hughes (12), Gaby Martinez (19) and Rashad Eldridge (4) homered for the Biscuits.

Brevard Co. 6, Vero Beach 3 (13). Wade Townsend turned in maybe his best performance of the season, allowing only 1 run in 6 innings on 4 hits and 3 walks. He struck out 2 and threw a wild pitch...Ryan Owen allowed a 3-run, walk-off home run in the 13th...Ryan Royster was 0-5.

Columbus v Lake County (ppd wet field)

Hudson Valley 5, Jamestown 2.

Princeton 3, Burlington 0. Tim Beckham was 2-4 with his first professional home run, a solo shot in the first inning off of a hanging curveball. He also stole his 4th base...Wait? Burt Reynolds is from the Domincan Republic? We did not see that one coming.

NOTES FROM DOWN ON THE FARM...

• Ben Badler spoke to Tim Beckham about his first professional home run. [Baseball America]

"It felt great to get that first one off my chest," Beckham said. "Finally. I mean, it took forever [34 games]. I was just worrying about squaring it up, making solid contact and hopefully it would fall somewhere, and it did."

• Ben Badler also spoke with Princeton manager Joe Szekely about Tim Beckham...Interesting note abot Szekely: He was a coach for the Colorado Silver Bullets, a professional baseball team comprised of women in the late 90s. If we remember correctly some of the pitchers threw overhand and some threw underhand. [Baseball America]

First of all, he has all the tools: he can run, he's got a good arm, he's got good hands, he can hit, he can hit for power. He possesses all the tools that you need and then he's got that desire, that want-to. He's coachable, and that's the biggest thing—he wants to learn. He asks questions all the time; he's constantly wanting to get better and get better now. He wants to get everything now, and he realizes after he's been here a while how much he's learned in the short time he's been here and how much more he needs to learn. It's good because he didn't come in here thinking that he had all the answers. He came in knowing that he had to learn and get better and iron things out, and he's doing a great job. He's made tremendous strides from the first day we saw him to now.

Rochester 1, Durham 0. After his first bad start with the Bulls in his last outing, Jeremy Cummings rebounded nicely, throwing 4 shutout innings, allowing only 2 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 4...Juan Salas gave up only his 2nd run in his last 18 innings. He worked 2 innings, striking out 2...The Bulls had only 2 hits, one from Chris Richard and one from Mike DiFelice, both singles...Fernando Perez stole his 18th base.

Montgomery 1, Mobile 0 (13). Wade Davis threw 7 shutout innings, striking out 4, giving up only 4 singles and a walk...In the 13 inning, the Biscuits took advantage of a throwing error on a sac bunt to move a runner to third. After an intentional walk, Montgomery scored the winning run when Chris Nowak grounded to the third baseman who tried to force Rashad Eldridge at home. The catcher dropped the throw to end the game...John Jaso was 2-4 with a walk.

Vero Beach (All-Star break)

Columbus 7, Rome 6. Jeremy Hall was roughed up for 5 runs in 3 innings...Glenn Gibson pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief...Reid Fronkhad 2 doubles and a 3-run home run in 4 at bats.

Tampa Bay Rays (27 days until Opening Day)

Yesterday: Tampa Bay Rays 10, Detroit 9.
The Rays are now 4-0 after starting the 2007 spring season 1-14. Willy Aybar started at third going 2-3 with 2 RBI, but committed his first error. That was the Rays' first error in four games. Dioner Navarro made his first appearance behind the plate, going 1-3. Elliot Johnson walked once in 2 plate appearances and stole a base and has now been on base 4 times in 6 plate appearances. The Rays have been especially aggressive on the basepaths with 10 swipes in the first 4 games. Ben Zobrist was 0-1 with 2 walks. He leads the Rays with 4 hits and has been on base 6 times in 12 plate appearances. Jake McGee did not allow a run, but did walk three in 1 inning of work. Andy Sonnanstine pitched a 1-2-3 ninth. The Rays seem keenly aware that they will need a 5th outfielder at some point this season and are auditioning several for that role. The three players with the most playing time in the first four games have been minor league outfielders. John Rodriguez leads the team with 21 innings played so far, followed by Justin Ruggiano (19) and Fernando Perez (16).

• Matt Garza was disappointed in the way he pitched in his Rays debut as the Tigers kept fouling pitches off. Garza had to be pulled with two outs in the second after 48 pitches, due to a 50-pitch limit. [Tampa Tribune]

"I went at it full-force," Garza said. "I was like - nope, it's not a spring training game, it's a game. There was somebody else in the box. That's definitely how I looked at it as a competitor. I was out there trying to win and I was disappointed in the way I pitched."

• Delmon Young will not make the trip to St. Pete today when the Rays take on the Twins. Clearly the Twins have decided to postpone the media circus that was surely to follow after Young's recent war of words with Carl Crawford. [The Heater]
• Joe Maddon says there is no need worry that Troy Percival has not yet made a spring appearance, noting that this is "just how he's done it in the past...With the Angels, many springs he made like seven appearances. That's the way he is." For the record, in his last three spring trainings, Percival has made 12 (2005 with DET), 11 (2004 with ANA) and 8 (2003 with ANA) appearances. [Tampa Bay Rays]
• Joe Henderson notes that moving Akinori Iwamura to second base has been part of the plan since the beginning and Aki has been more than willing to do whatever the team has asked. [Tampa Tribune]
  
• Mike Bauman notes that the addition of a third legitimate starter (Matt Garza) is the one big reason there is so much hope in the 2008 for the Rays. [MLB]

The Rays like Garza's stuff and they like his makeup..."He's high-energy, he very much gets into it, he likes to be out there, he likes to compete," Maddon said. "I get all that from him. Just watching him work, the ball has great low carry to it. It's a really good finish to the fastball. That's unusual, and you have to throw pretty hard to get that kind of finish to the ball."

• Apparently one third baseman in the system with a famous name wasn't enough for Andrew Friedman. The Rays have signed undrafted free agent Burt Reynolds to a minor league deal. [Baseball America]
